Picture source: Atypical CuriositiesDo you want to collect insects but are afraid of them? The UK-based artist Sarah Leonard from Atypical Curiosities has an alternative way by harnessing mixed media embroidery art that took inspiration from entomology, nature, and anatomy.
At first, she started selling her art under the name Atypical Stitch back in 2017 where she made mixed media anatomy art that focused predominantly on vulva and uterus art. Then in April 2020, she changed the name to Atypical Curiosities as a place to share her alternative artwork.Picture source: Atypical CuriositiesHere, she created embroidery on canvas using simple materials such as beads, sequins, watercolor, and repurposed jewelry which she combines with traditional embroidery techniques. Usually, the beads were taken from broken pieces heading for landfill, she sources them from second-hand shops and people who kindly donate their unwanted jewelry to her.Picture source: Atypical CuriositiesEach piece that Sarah created is a unique artwork, and she doesn't do repeat pieces. Although, there may be similarly themed pieces in the future, but she doesn't make a replication. To purchase her creations, you can check her website: www.atypicalcuriosities.com
